1982/446 Newport, RI Composition Mantel c.1810-1820
To a rare Newport, Rhode Island area white pine neoclassic fireplace mantelpiece of the circa 1810-1820. The mantel shelf has three projections and is mounted with gouge carved stop fluted dentil. Below the frieze is mounted with a course of dentilation and three applied tablets. The central tablet with a classic motive which is known to have been made by Robert Wellford's shop in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The end tablets are mounted with neoclassic urns and pearls between the tablets the sinkage is mounted with rich bell flower swags, urns of fruit, and drapery. A carved diamond and gouge work course of moulding foots the tablets. The mantel legs or jambs have applied pilasters with bell flower motive and Greek mask. Also there are moulded wooden capitals and bases with rich oval paterae. Above the capitals around the hearth opening is a geosche trim mounted with the original bass strapwork tool rest supports.The mantel has been hand cleaned of all old paint buildup, woodwork repairs have been made as necessary and a rich hand rubbed patina finish applied. Should you wish to paint the mantel, use a soft cloth with turpentine to remove any wax from the surface of the mantel prior to painting.
