Description

This is one of the finest and most monumental secretaries of the period, note the extremely well-developed columns with pineapples, rosettes, eagles, etc. The background in the carved eagle is stamped typical of Salem work, of which Manchester is nearby. The upper case has a beautifully carved American eagle with shield .The lower case has a bow front with its original brasses. Interestingly, we have similar style bureau with bow front and related columns .The lid drops open to reveal a leather writing surface  with drawers, etc. It is interesting to note that, similar to fine New York cabinetwork, the desk interior drawer sides and back are thin and of mahogany. The case itself has a beautiful amber glow, all of which we have carefully French polished. This secretary has few, if any, rivals in its category. It is simply the best of the late classical casepieces made throughout the 1820's and possibly early 40's. Note the dovetails, et al. It's first class, and sophisticated work.

A related worktable is illustrated in Essex County Furniture by Dean A. Fales, Jr. with similar columns,
