David's Den - "Charmingly Shabby"

Who Can Argue?

As I was doing my due diligence for Latique this morning, I came across this 18th century Continental hanging corner cabinet from Antiquario Antiques.  I was reading the description and I had to chuckle a bit when I saw it described as “charmingly shabby…”Now I have been in the antiques business for quite a while now, and you discover over time how to “romance” your product. After all, it’s your baby and you want to give it the best recommendation possible. I have to admit though, “charmingly shabby” has eluded my descriptive prowess for all these many years…and I have to tell you…I’m not very happy about it. Why didn’t I think of it first? Believe me, I’ve bought, sold and owned many “charmingly shabby” antiques. In fact, in hindsight, they were probably some of my favorite pieces. It’s kind of like the “ugly” puppy that just needs a little love and a good home…..they are hard to resist! This corner cabinet captures all the eloquence required to be charming. The allegorical scene is definitive of the time. It reaches out and applauds your good taste.  Its shabbiness is the allure. I mean really…."who can argue"? Not me!
