This fabulous William and Mary Escritoire is truly one of the finest I have seen in my 30 plus years in the Antiques biz. The color, the mellow patina, the form and superb burled veneers are truly outstanding. A prime example from Madeline West Antiques. So what is an Escritoire? The word itself derives from the French word "ecrire" meaning "to write", and generally describes a desk having a section above the writing area that contains various "pigeon holes" and secret compartments. Named after King William and Queen Mary, who ruled England from 1688 to 1702, this period piece correctly presents a well-developed sense of display and articulation that would undoubtly make it a wonderful focal point for any room.
